Featered ETTEAM Seller ~ LeapingGazelle

Contributed by: Heather of Nifty Knits

This is...Lauren
of Leaping Gazelle Studios, whose shop leapinggazelle is on Etsy.com

Favourite colour?

I used to be a very monochromatic person, a “lose myself in the variations of white” kind of person. Then my daughter was born. From little on she gravitated toward color, every color all at once, the more the better! So she added color to my world. And now I can’t imagine being the person I was. Right now I’m really into sea tones... blue, aqua, teal.

Favourite smell?

I love the smell of spring, when the snow is melting and the ground is thawing, after all of the false starts and surprise storms, when you know it’s finally the real deal... so fresh. Close seconds are coffee, chocolate and vanilla.

Favourite place?

Anywhere my family is. As a journalist I covered a lot of tough stories and it really hit home with me how fleeting life is, so I try to take some time each day to really enjoy the moments of now. And that's a challenge for me, to not always be thinking about future plans.

Favourite way to spend your time?

Creating! That feeling of losing yourself in an idea, not knowing where it will take you. Some of of my best creations have been happy accidents.

deep roots tree

Favourite item in your shop of all time?

Usually whatever I’ve just finished, if that’s possible. Is anything ever really finished? I’m into some of the dreamier looks right now. I love to make focal pieces that someone could design a room around, that might add a pop of color to a very minimalist setting.

Favourite shop that isn’t yours?

www.maiautumn.etsy.com Christine Lindstrom’s watercolors are so beautiful and elegant to me.

I especially like one entitled “Delicate.”

What has been the most useful lesson you’ve learnt so far that you’d like to pass on to our readers?

You don’t have to do it all at once! Okay, I’m still learning this one. It can be overwhelming, first to send your work into the world, and then to realize the amount of time spent on business and marketing. I make lists of long term goals, but try to please both sides of my brain. Every day I work on one avenue to forward my business and one new creative idea... if there’s more time and inspiration, that’s great, but one of each is the must-do. I’ve discovered I accomplish more by focusing on small daily goals. I’m a much saner person too.

Thank you Lauren! I want to close by quoting from Lauren's Etsy profile, as I think it explains her Art:

things I love:

the stillness of morning
the color of autumn
reflections in water
words that resonate through time
hands that have lived and worked and loved
a good cup of coffee
the smell of vanilla
my children's giggles

How to add a shopping cart to your blog!

Contributed by: Celeste, of CricketsCreations

There's a new widget for our blogs from http://cr8tivity.com/ that creates a scrolling "Buy" shopping cart direct to our Etsy shop (see the "3 Product" widget at upper right)! Here's a step by step instruction tutorial on how I placed this scrolling photo shopping cart on my blog, Crickets Creations Handknit Scarves:

I went to http://cr8tivity.com/

I typed in my etsy shop username into the white field and hit the "helpers" button

I clicked "Widgets" in black font at upper left of screen

I clicked "3 Product" to have 3 items shown at a time (choose how many products you would like to see displayed on your own blog)

I placed my cursor in the "Original Version" text field and hit Ctrl + A at the same time on my keyboard to highlight all of the text in that field.

Then I hit Ctrl + C at the same time to copy that text

Then I went to my blog and logged in (I use blogger/blogspot)

I clicked "Layout" and then clicked "Add a Gadget"

I clicked the "+" sign next to "HTML/JavaScript and a new field appeared

I placed my cursor in the Content field and hit Ctrl + V at the same time on my keyboard to paste in the coding I had copied from the Cr8tivity site.

I added a Title (Shop with Crickets) and clicked to "Save"

I THEN (very important, all your work will be lost without this last step!) clicked the orange "Save" button on the "Add and Arrange Page Elements" page

Then I clicked to "View Blog" to make sure I did it all correctly. :)

Lastly, a made a donation to Troy at http://cr8tivity.com/ as a thank you!

Hope this is helpful for your Etsy online shops and blogs,

Celeste (Crickets)

The Etsy Treasury Team: for Marketing Go-Getters

Contributed by: Midnightcoiler

Are you interested in joining one of Etsy's top marketing teams?

The Etsy Treasury Team membership is open for applicants! We're looking for members who will be dedicated to promoting their fellow team members. That means you must be ready and willing to regularly devote your TIME in order to be promoted and continue with the team. Mutual promotion is our top priority, and we are a very active team with ALMOST DAILY REQUIREMENTS:

1. Comment and 12 click on all member treasuries
2. Make at least 1 treasury per month featuring 6 or more members
3. Check into our chat threads and stay connected and engaged with the team

What will you receive? Your shop will gain lots of exposure by being featured in treasuries made by teammates. Your own treasuries will gain the support of member views and comments. The more treasuries you're items are in, the better chance of selling, exposure, and/or getting to the front page of Etsy.

You'll also receive fabulous marketing ideas and advice by participating in our public and private threads, and in our private shop critiques. Being a member means you can ask for support and receive it. Want to be nominated or voted for in a voter or want us to look at a blog or non-team treasury you're featured in? Want an interview or to have your article featured in the Treasury Team blog, or maybe one of our member's blogs? Want to be included in special team/blog promotions, giveaways, sales? Have questions about Etsy or your shop? Count on your teammates, as they will count on you.

Many members consider the team as a kind of family. There's a vast amount of knowledge here, and smart, kind, fun people who are willing to share. Everyone receives and gives back to remain on the team. Could you be one of those people?

Read more about our team at our website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/etsytreasuryteam/

Cumulative Effect of Advertising

Contributed by:  Etteam member, Waterrose

On the Etsy forum I see the question asked over and over again in various forms—
  • Is it worth it to have a blog or website?
  • Is it worth it to advertise with Entrecard and Project Wonderful
  • Does it make sense to have Flicker, Facebook, Social Spark, My It Things, or Stylehive,
  • Should I spend time in the Forums, Chatroom, or making Treasuries?
I would answer with a resounding yes to all of them! Why? Have you ever noticed that every company that is successful doesn't use just one form of advertising medium. Back in the day, the choices were print, tv, or radio. Look at all of the choices we have today and you say…yes and all of the time I need to spend utilizing all of it. But think about this. The first time you see a logo/brand you may not even click on it. But, then you see it a second time in a different place, then a third time somewhere else. Your curiosity is now whetted and you click. See how this works?

You are thinking, I don't have time to spend doing all of this, keep track of it and make my beautiful creations. That is why if you want to become successful and stay that way you need to set up a marketing campaign. On a calendar or a spreadsheet. ON PAPER!
You don't want to advertise all at one time it is better to stagger your campaign and overlap your efforts. So if you are already using Etsy plan the days/hours that you will spend in the forum, or choose how many times a week/month you want to make a treasury, or how often you want to chat. Put all of this on a calendar. Then look at Entrecard and plan your time there. Perhaps begin that campaign in a week or so. Visit Project Wonderful, give yourself a budget of $10, and look for blogs that fit the segment of the population that you want to reach. Set up your Project Wonderful marketing campaign so that it starts in another two weeks and lasts for a month or more.

It is important to have a campaign that is consistent, visible, and ongoing. If you are using the same avatar people will begin recognizing your avatar (which means you should have one that you like really well and is clickable). This is a good reason to create a brand for yourself so that if you like changing your avatar every so often people will still recognize it. Otherwise, you need to keep the same look so that when people see your logo/avatar they say, Oh that is ABC, they make XYZ. Perhaps you want to be known for also making LMN and OPQ. If you create a brand using the same colors, text, or images with a twist for each product it will pull your entire line together and people will recognize you as making all of those products.

Think about the big companies, McDonalds, Apple, Johnson & Johnson, Neiman Marcus, Intel…you may see their brand in TV ads, on radio, on the internet, in print, or on a billboard. Now ask yourself
why they advertise in all of these medias. It's because they know that the more you "see" them the more likely it is that you will recognize, feel comfortable, and remember them. You may only see an apple or golden arches without any text, but you immediately know who the advertiser is. Think about Etsy and the colors they use, now when you see that shade of orange don't you think about Etsy? In essence, they are also growing your trust by becoming recognizable which means that you will be more likely to think of them when you want to buy something that they produce. And, how do they do this? By advertising in many mediums over sustained periods of time.

Featuring! ~ Fellow Etsy Artisan LamaWorks

Contributed by: Heather of NiftyKnits

Here's Etteam member, Laura, of Lamaworks.

Favourite colour?
That depends on the day ... lately I'm a purple girl.

Favourite smell?
Oooh I have a Ginos East pizza in the oven right this minute, so pizza it is!

Favourite place?
My parents house. They live in a cozy log cabin on a beautiful lake in the middle of northern Wisconsin. It is so peaceful up there. I could spend hours on the dock with a book, listening to the waves roll by.

Favourite sound?
My 3 year old niece when she says, "Hi Auntie Wauda!"

Favourite way to spend your time?
Anything crafty! I have a need to always be working on something. Sitting still just isn't an option, so I'm always working on something.

Favourite item in your shop of all time?
I really love the bright colors and different textures in the Wild Raspberry "thank you" card set.

I think a close second are any of the triangle patchwork scarves. I love how all the colors blend together.

Favourite Etsy shop that isn’t yours?
Ooh, I really want a bag from ShibaNgDesigns!!

Why?
They are so unique! I love how she uses random embellishments, but ties it all in together with her stitching.

What has been the most useful lesson you’ve learnt so far that you’d like to pass on to our readers?

Keep pushing forward! Things start slow in the beginning, but if you keep making things and keep advertising, and networking and promoting, and blogging and .... it all really pays off! The more you get out there, the more people see you and want something from your shop!

If I can I'd also like to plug a good cause ... I donate 10% of all of my sales to The American Cancer Society through the Carry On Campaign. It's a cause I really believe in and one of my goals in life is to make a difference.

You can find out more about me and my progress with Carry On on my blog: www.lamaworks.blogspot.com or on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/lamaworks

Don't forget to check out Laura's shop: Lamaworks and follow

Treasury making for Newbies!

Contributed by:  Tina of AdornMeJewelry
I've had several people now ask me how to make, and find, a Treasury. I figured maybe I'd lay out some basic information for those of you who want to make a Treasury but don't know where or how to start.

Start here: the Poster Sketch at Etsy. Bookmark that page. It is where you can lay out the items you want to put in your Treasury and can see just what they'll look like once you catch your Treasury. The easiest way to add items is to go to the page of the item you want to add and copy the last 8 numbers in the listing URL (after "listing_id="), as you see in the photo to the left. Then click "edit" so the item field opens up. Then

paste the item number into the field for each item in your Sketch, and then click "edit" again. You should now see the item you want to add to your treasury. Once you have them all added, as well as four alternates, you can drag the items around to arrange and re-arrange until it's just how you like it. Just so you know, you may choose one of your own items, but admin will not use your treasury for the FP if you do -- but if they like your treasury enough to use it for the FP they will usually switch your item out before using it. I never put my own items in my treasuries for that reason. Plus, it just seems like inappropriate self-promotion to me, but YMMV. Also, for the same reason keep in mind that you should not use more than one item from the same shop.

Next, here is a great site, Craftopolis. It's a great resource for us Etsians, and especially those of us who pay attention to, and like to create, treasuries. Go there and type your store name in the field and it will show you if you're in any treasuries. Bookmark it now. That way, it will automatically load showing the treasuries you're in without you having to type it in each time. If you click the Treasury Clock tab near the top it will tell you how long it will be until each treasury opens up, Main and Treasury West (TW for short). If you click the name of the Treasury (Main or TW) it will take you to the main page for that treasury.

The main treasury has to drop below 333 treasuries before you can get one. TW has to drop between 222 in order to get one. You want to be there as soon as it drops -- the second it drops. You want to click on the Expiration arrow until it's pointing up, so you can see when the various treasuries expire, and you want to see the ones that will expire the soonest. The page self-refreshes, so you don't need to refresh it as it counts down. As a matter of fact, if you do try to refresh and it's too close to the time when it's going to open, you might miss it. Just leave the treasury window open. When I know it's going to expire soon I keep it to the left of my monitor, so I can see the numbers as they drop out of the corner of my eye, while I work in another browser page to the right. Be aware that some people delete their treasuries before they expire, so that the treasury can open up earlier than you think, so if it says it opens in 2 hours, say, keep that window open and keep an eye on it, as it will likely open up sooner than that. When it gets close enough (just a few away, if it's only going to be a few minutes, and not like an hour or something), I stop working and have the treasury window front and center. Have the name of your treasury ready and copy it to your clipboard so that the second it drops below 222 or 333, depending upon the treasury, you can scroll down to the bottom of the page and click in the box, do a Ctrl+v and paste the name into the box and hit Enter immediately. You want to do this fast, because you can lose out in a few seconds if you're too slow. Then you just go and start pasting your items and your alternates into the new treasury and viola!

You can also add a kind of tag line right under the name, and put a link to your blog, or a cause, or something interesting, if you like.

Now, give your treasury a good start by clicking each active item. You do this for two reasons: first, to make sure that none of them are sold; if they are, replace the item with an alternate or something else you've just found that seems like it would be perfect. Also, you are allowed to give your treasury one view, so you're starting your treasury off with views.

When you click on each item, you can hit the "contact" link on that item and tell the person you have added them to your treasury, and paste in the URL of your treasury so they can go see. This is within Etsy's rules and is not considered to be spamming or a violation. Many people like to know when their item is in a treasury and most will go look, click and comment, which is what you want. Some will even write you back, thanking you. It's all part of being friendly neighbors, promoting each other and maybe even getting to know someone new and wonderful. I've made several friends this way. There are SO many fantastic Etsians that it's heartening and makes it feel like a real community, and not *quite* so small a fish in a big pond.

You can also tweet your treasury, list it on your blog and/or your FB fan page, and the front of your store page if you like. Treasury-making is fun, and looking at them is fun, too. When you look, it's always nice to click the items and leave a comment. It's not compulsory, but is a friendly thing to do. Have fun with it!

Hope this has helps. Happy Treasury making! :c)

Featered ETTEAM Seller ~ Lindesigns

Contributed by:  Heather of NiftyKnits

Lindi is a fellow Etteam member, and makes beautiful jewellery (although she no doubt spells it "jewelry"!) I know I've used these earrings with the honey bee in at least one treasury!

Quickies for starters:

Cats or dogs?

Dogs, of course! Unfortunately I'm currently dogless as I lost my sweet dalmatian a few months ago. But hope to adopt 1 or 2 dogs soon!

Star Wars or Star Trek?

Star Wars!!!!

Fruit or chocolate?

Chocolate - dark!

Favourite colour?

Green

Favourite meal?

Hmm, I have to pick just one?
So far my favorite would be when we bought a roast chicken and potatoes at a French market added some fresh bread and cheese, fruits and pastries and made our own picnic in a nearby park - doesn't get any better than that! :)

City break or weekend in the country?

Since I live in the suburbs, I'd have to say a city break, preferably in Europe! :)

Soaps or documentaries?

Documentaries - although, I'll confess I occasionally watch a soap every so often.

Bath or shower?

Shower, but if I had a jacuzzi tub I would be in that everyday!

Now we’ve got you warmed up…

What brought you to Etsy? Tell us about your shop (or shops) Do you sell anywhere else?

I starting buying off Etsy in 2007 and decided it might be a good place to try my hand at selling some of my pieces. I spent months reading all the articles I could find on Etsy about opening/running a store/marketing and decided to go for it.

I started out with mainly jewelry and some photos, but have added some accessories lately.  I have not sold anywhere else yet, but plan to get
my website up and running soon!

What’s the favourite item you’ve made so far?

Any of the items in my Simply Silver Collection, but I like the hammered flower best!
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=23778723

What has been the most useful lesson you’ve learnt (about Etsy) so far?

Finding and joining a group with supportive participants

*Nifty nods in agreement* We love ETTEAM!

If you could start again, is there anything you’d do differently?

Maybe a different shop name...List and renew more often than I did in the beginning - I had no idea how important that was until recently!

How do you see your store developing?

Adding some accessories for men and women
Paring items down to what sells best and not doing too many 'one off' pieces

What have you been doing today that I’ve interrupted?

Making some fabric brooches and jewelry!

What’s your top marketing tip for today?

Go to Timothy Adam Design blogspot for a wealth of information on selling and driving traffic to your shop.

Thanks for that Lindi.
